Goddess Mother
A friend posted such an inspiring photo online that I asked her permission to do a drawing of her with her new baby. The piece took on a life of itself, and became something different from the photograph. I hope it still represents to viewers that love which I witnessed in the original photograph. Goddess Mother was done to express our connectedness to Mother Earth, the diversity of our species, and the right to love anyone of our choosing, be they the same sex, gender, and race or from a different identity. This is my most controversial greeting card – people seem to either love it or go silent and look confused.
It certainly wasn’t a great business decision (I think I’ve only sold a couple of this design). But I stand by what I’m attempting to express: in particular, that families come in all sizes, even when some families don’t seem consistent with our notion of biology. There are so many interracial and adopted children in the world now, and not every child’s skin tone matches the mother or grandmother’s skin tone (even biological children, as in the case of one white and one black twin). I really wanted to create a card that supported the unique identities of these children and youth who are faced with a world that wants their family to look a certain way. All loving families are beautiful!
