Luckiest Charm
Near St. Patrick’s Day in 2015, I knew I should create a good birthday card for my grandmother who was born on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th. I also wanted something that wasn’t so birthday themed that people couldn’t use it for an Irish celebration alone. But I had one problem: I didn’t feel like drawing anything other than a panda and a rainbow! I thought about what pandas eat: bamboo. Bamboo happens to be seen as good luck in some parts of the world. This reminded me of the cereal, Lucky Charms, and I decided to draw a panda cub with a bamboo plant under a rainbow with raining four-leaf clovers. My grandmother has a knack for finding four-leaf clovers, perhaps because she was born on a lucky day or maybe because she might be observant or tenacious or both.
