Slice of Life: Options for Menstrual Products

There are many options besides what you see on store shelves.

For health reasons, the demands of an active lifestyle, or to help the environment, some people are choosing fun new alternatives to conventional pads and tampons. Many years ago I made a brochure outlining the history of sanitary napkins, various disposable and non-disposable options, companies and their websites where people can go shopping for alternatives to the standard options available at stores. (You’ll have to forgive any broken links; a quick search online will tell you just how numerous your options really are!)

LOTS of designs!

LOTS of designs!

My favorite of these options, although not the most sustainable, are reusable fleece pads that snap onto underwear and come in a huge variety of colors and patterns, with designs including cupcakes, owls, foxes, unicorns, flowers, cats, shooting stars and solid colors that mask stains such as red and black. I have some organic cotton ones as well, mostly from Lunapads, a Canadian company with a cool social justice perk to their environmentally conscious mission. What’s your favorite product or company?
